I have no problem with the UFC or it's promoters and owners. I do however have on small problem with (maybe Joe Silva) the match makers and possible the rankings standard. The thing that just made me think of this is that apparently they've just promised Thiago Alves a title shot for the WW Title for beating Karo P.

Let's just play this out hypathetically. Gsp and Serra fight and Serra wins. Serra's next fight is against Matt Hughes (regardless). Hughes Wins. Gsp gets an immediate shot. Gsp wins. Fitch gets his "promised" title shot. Gsp wins. THEN Alves gets his title shot. Gsp wins again. Based on how long the UFC has belt holders defending their titles, how long could that take (thinking as short as possible). Given the general 3 month minimum release, that could take 15 months!!!! I'm sure it won't go that way. But lets say this: Gsp and Serra fight and Gsp wins every match-up not counting a re-match for a very marketable Gsp v. Serra 3. It's still A YEAR AWAY SILVA!!!! It makes no sense that they tell these guys they're getting title shots when it's a year-year and a half down the road.

Plus, how the hell do they figure that Thiago Alves gets a title shot over someone like Koscheck or Sanchez? I mean, neither of those guys has had a chance yet and they've got better records. I really feel that there should be a planned ladder ranking system that fans can follow to know what fights really mean, is this for a title shot or is this to climb one more leg of the ladder? Then maybe we'll have better candidates for these title shots. IDK, I just think these "promised" title shots are dumb.

Nice post Guru...

I think the UFC knows that there is a lot of support for Alves from his fans right now, and from the way the UFC handles promotions, Alves is hot right now... so IMO, this is probably why they're going in that direction... it's all about the dollars !

I do however see your point regarding the future aspect of your scenario, as we all know... anything can happen in a MMA fight... anything !

LOL, for sure Rich, I guess I'm just tired of thinking "Yes, a title shot!!!" and then realizing it's a year out or more. I wonder if he'll be hot still by then. I mean, he can't not fight between now and then or he'll get wasted and, hell, he may even lose so then what?

Alves said he wants to fight again before a title. If GSP loses he'll lose two spots on the ranking and have to fight two people before he has to fight hughes again ...buy then hughes will have defended his title twice against alves and karo while GSP is fighting his way up against Fitch and Serra or Penn? And then Matt Hughes retires before GSP gets back to the title shot...if he ever does after this devastating second loss to Serra.

Anythin can happen when people are told about title shots. just look at Karo he was told he was getting on years ago and it never happened and in the meantime he has been slowly sliding down the suckage ladder and isn't even close now to getting a title shot.

it all comes down to what sells. Dana the pimp lol

Yeah, and I guess that's why I think they should stop floating the opportunity out to anyone that wants to hear it. I honestly wouldn't want to hear it if I knew that I was poorly standing on a ladder ranking, but since there isn't one.......
