Now i know the guys are in there to fight and not be best buddies, and i'll agree it's a bit annoying when during a fight they're acknowledging good strikes and whatnot, but at the start of the match doing this is just plain disrespectful dont you think?

Yeah, that was a bad cheap shot. At the very least he should have not put his hand up there like he was going to touch gloves. That is even worse that when Okami came out with a flying knee on Rich Franklin.

I agree, i was a little shocked to see this. I think it's a nice thing to touch gloves at the start of the first round. It shows respect and honour.

But you can also argue these guys aren't in there to cuddle and make friends...

I'd say that it's a good sign of the fact that the UFC should just make sure they give the guys the option every time before the fight starts in the center of the ring (PRIDE style) to touch or not touch gloves. Then these "James Thompson"-ish things don't get scrutinized. Really, I think that would eliminate fighters trying to be aggressive at the bell and then getting hammered for it.

When the ref says "Protect yourself at all times" he ain't kidding. I agree the old PRIDE style touch gloves bit would be better and definitely remove this kind of uncertainty.
